It's finally Derby day

In the church hall, the track was set up the night before, the sensors cabled up, and the other arrangements prepared:

Looking sharp in his Class A uniform before the races start:

The speedy blue-and-yellow car is visible among the pack:

The results of one of the hundred (!) heats:

That software figure out which cars raced in which lanes, what the scale speed was (no, they didn't really go 200 mph -- though that would have been really cool), and who the eventual winners were among the various dens and siblings. Pretty amazing.
Ultimately we weren't at the top of the standings, but making the car was fun. He learned a lot: to use a drill and chisel, to paint with tape for a clean edge, and to be tough when things didn't work out.
